Cleaning Computer Components

 Cleaning Computer Components

1. General Safety Precautions

  • Turn off & unplug the computer before cleaning.
  • Discharge static electricity by touching a grounded metal object or wearing an anti-static wrist strap.
  • Use non-conductive cleaning tools (plastic brushes, microfiber cloth).
  • Never spray liquids directly on components—spray on a cloth first.

2. External Cleaning

a. Case (Cabinet)

  • Tools: Microfiber cloth, mild detergent, compressed air.
  • Wipe exterior panels with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Remove dust from vents using compressed air or a soft brush.

b. Keyboard

  • Disconnect the keyboard.
  • Turn upside down and gently shake to remove debris.
  • Use compressed air between keys.
  • Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (70%+) on a cloth or cotton swab.

c. Mouse

  • Wipe body with alcohol-dampened cloth.
  • For optical sensors, use a dry cotton swab to remove dust.

d. Monitor

  • Turn off and unplug.
  • Use a microfiber cloth (dry or lightly damp with water/distilled water).
  • Avoid harsh cleaners; never press hard on the screen.

3. Internal Cleaning

(Do this every 3–6 months for best performance.)

a. Opening the Case

  • Remove side panel carefully.
  • Keep screws safe in a small container.

b. Dust Removal

  • Compressed air: Blow short bursts to remove dust from fans, motherboard, RAM slots, PSU vents.
  • Hold fan blades in place to avoid spinning while cleaning.
  • Soft brush: Gently loosen stubborn dust without scratching.

c. CPU Cooler

  • Remove dust buildup from heatsink fins.
  • If thermal paste is old (>2 years), clean with isopropyl alcohol and reapply fresh paste.

d. RAM & Expansion Cards

  • Remove sticks/cards carefully.
  • Clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert firmly into slots.

e. Power Supply

  • Use compressed air from outside vents only.
  • Do not open PSU unless you are trained—it contains dangerous voltages.

f. Storage Drives

  • Just remove dust from surfaces and connectors.
  • Avoid shaking or applying pressure.

4. Special Notes

  • Avoid vacuum cleaners inside the case—they can generate static electricity.
  • Label cables before disconnecting for easy reassembly.
  • Clean regularly to prevent overheating and prolong component life.
